What is Vinyasa Yoga?

What is Vinyasa Yoga?

Like most Sanskrit words the english translation can have many meanings.

In modern yoga the word ‘Vinyasa’ has become synonymous with the Ashtanga Vinyasa method of Mysore for its’ ‘breath-movement system’.

However the word ‘Vinyasa’ also means ‘placement’ and so refers to the correct placement of the breath, body and posture within a yoga practice.

This hints at the skill needed to practice efficiently and with the correct knowledge of what goes where and when to do what etc in any given practice.

Another definition of the word is ‘step by step’ which refers to the slow, deliberation nature of progressing further only when one step has been mastered is the next taken.

This is a hard process for the modern mind to adhere to. The use of different mediums has afforded us a preview of nearly all styles of yoga before we even take our first class and so from the very beginning the mind can become confused as to what exactly yoga is.

In modern day yoga most people find themselves in a group class practicing a style with a particular theme. For example it may be a vigorous flowing practice or a slow moving alignment based practice. In ancient times the yogis of India most likely practiced alone with their teacher and were given the correct postures and only those specific to their individual needs and blockages. Unfortunately this way of obtaining knowledge is hard to find and so we find ourselves doing the same postures as everyone else. There is security in this way of practicing but after some time (possibly years) the practice becomes stale and tired because the mindy/body has not moved on from its attachment to doing a particular class or style. We may like the routine but the process of absorption within the Self, as yoga promises, is not a linear destination but an ever evolving dynamic activity.

As Vinyasa also means ‘step by step’ the approach to the practice must be progressive, dynamic and also cater to the needs of the individuals limitations. Forcing or pushing the body into poses it is not ready for, over-use of alignment techniques and under- use of the bodies natural movement patterns leads to injury and disillusionment. For the practice to continually evolve the mind must pay keen attention to the activity while addressing the inherent blockages and patterns imposed upon our bodies.

Course Curriculum

Course Curriculum

Our programme is designed for students who may already be serious practitioners and now want to deepen their understanding of how to practice and teach safely, and with inspiration. Learn to implement a strong and intelligent Self-practice. It is through constant and persistent practice that the seed of teaching is sown. When the practice then blossoms the flower of knowledge is ready to be shared. The primal virtues of correct practice are the trinity of; Power (Prana) and it’s cultivation, the Wisdom (Buddhi) needed to maintain it and the Love (Atman) needed to understand it’s correct use.

A large portion of the training is devoted to practice teaching using Vinyasa Krama (intelligent sequencing) from the lineage of Krishnamacharya (Guru of renowned teachers like BKS Iyengar and Sri K Pattabhi Jois). This will prepare those ready to teach the correct approach to sequencing and presenting a safe, effective and challenging class.

Why, if yoga is a therapy, are more and more students sustaining injuries? Learn how to maintain a powerful dynamic practice while keeping it safe and effective. The course gives extensive instruction in the theory and practice of yogaasana, basic kriya, breath, the art of teaching, and a practical overview of yogic and ayurvedic philosophy. Students and yoga instructors alike will find this course effective and comprehensive in its presentation. This training is designed to serve as a catalyst for intense and rapid growth. When you begin to teach, or think like a teacher your understanding will invariably deepen. However only through correct and persistent practice may this process begin. You will be led through this process with inspiration and confidence. Please see our Testimonial page for comments from recent graduates.

Who is this training programme designed for?

Who is this training programme designed for?

This 250 hour programme is designed for yoga practitioners with a minimium of 3 years consistent practice. There are many trainings of varying lengths and quality so we try to encourage students to attend based on what is appropriate to their existing practice level and not what might at first appear convenient. It takes many years to become a good teacher learning from experience as well as our own practice and studies. This training is designed to help you cultivate your own home practice first and foremost, it will be our own practice that will always be the main platform for teaching.

For those who want to teach a dynamic practice yet learn how to keep their students bodies safe. For existing teachers looking to become the best they can be through confidence and inspiration. Over twenty years we have developed a system of dynamic yoga blended from the Krishnamacharya lineage that promotes a practice of intelligence and awareness, keeping your bodies integrity safe.

In conjunction with the above material which is mainly a template, the content of the course includes the insights of the Lead teachers over many years of practice. Any technique or practice shared on this course has been utilised for many years beforehand and is proven for it’s efficiency and beneficial application. Although the exposure to such techiniques may take a short period of time the refinement process will take years. Exposure to unnecessary and seemingly complicated postures or techniques will only hinder the evolution of the individual so this process is kept simple (not to be confused with easy) clear and concise. Coming to a process like this with a ‘Beginners Mind’ is the best approach as it opens the individual to an authentic learning experience and not just another accomplishment.

The 250 hour program commencing in Yoga Dublin Dundrum from October 2019. There are 20 weekends which will take  two years to complete. Each weekend is held Saturday and Sunday 9.30am-5pm.

There are two full practice sessions held in the mornings and Philosophy/Teaching Methodology in the
afternoons.

Total contact hours = 250 hours

The full cost of the teacher training programme is €3350.00 (includes €500 deposit to secure a space, full tuition and Training Manual). A discounted price of €2995.00 if fee is paid in full before commencement of course

A note on the  format:

It is a misconception in the present times that a 250 hour training course makes you a teacher of anything. This training has previously been held over one year and then more recently two years to reflect the level and experience of the applicants. However it takes at least 7-10 years of consistent practice and regular teaching to truly be able to call oneself a Teacher.

No doubt you are aware there are many different training programmes available and we do not think for a second that have devised the best one however we are trying to meet the students where their current level of knowledge is.

This means that for most a year-long programme or less is just not long enough to accumulate and integrate enough experience and knowledge to teach effectively or at any great depth. Each module will include a home practice format that is laid out progressively so that the student can maintain an effective home practice in preparation for the next modules content. It will always be our personal practice that lays the foundation for teaching effectively and intelligently.

When deciding on the right programme for you it is important to consider the quality of the content and experience of the faculty and not just the cost and location of the programme.

Weekend Schedule: 12 hours per weekend

The schedule takes into account how much an individual can actually take on both experientially and intellectually over a given period of time. We have previously done up to 20 hours in one weekend and in reality that is too much to absorb and be useful for most people.

We meet  Saturday and Sunday 9.30am -12.30pm and 2pm -5.00pm. This course will include an in-depth study of Yoga-asana including but not limited to: Preparatory work, Sun Salutations, Standing postures, Forward Bends, Twists, Backbends and Inversions – Also including Yoga Philosophy, Introduction to Ayurveda, Yogic Anatomy, Teaching Methodology/Practice and Self-practice.

Graduates will be required to maintain a minimum grade of 95% in attendance and coursework to receive a certification. The Director reserves the right to grant certification on the basis of these requirements only. The certifcation qualifies one to teach only the contents of the foundation course of VFY Ireland. As this is a foundation course it is strongly recommended that graduates continue their studies under experienced teachers on completion of the training.

Our curriculum is recognised by Yoga Alliance ( An international registry of certification programmes – www.yogaalliance.org) at the 200 hour level (RYS 200). Insurance coverage is available to those who receive certification through Holistic Insurance (UK).
